Windows Media Center 2005 Can’t Join Domains

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I spent a long time looking for information on joining a domain with Windows XP MCE recently. I personally cannot/will not guarantee it will work—it could even kill your Media Center Edition installation. And there might even be other, easier ways to do this. But I’m going to post this here and eventually try it for the fun of it in a lab environment. I certainly wouldn’t recommend trying it in a productions environment without lots of testing.

DLL patching hero Rafael has found a great way to enable your MCE 2005 install to join Windows domains. Rafael, known for patching the now famous uxtheme.dll to enable custom Windows XP msstyle themes has found a reg edit in Windows XP Media Center 2005 to unlock the previously “greyed out” join domain option. This method is pretty complex but confirmed to work.

This will allow you to leave and join domains within Windows Media Center Edition 2005.
